Hello, I just came back from an awesome school trip. We went to Los Angeles for a week meeting professional creatives and visiting studios over there (DreamWorks studio is amazing). My class and I also got to visit the WWA Gallery, which had so many talented artists and illustrators up on their walls. Here is a small compilation of stunning work I was exposed to while I was in LA. Warning: there are a lot of images in this post. There are just so many inspiring people!

Did anyone read the Artemis Fowl series, written by Eoin Colfer, back in 2001? I’m doing a school assignment where we illustrate four chapter headings and the endpaper for a book of our choosing. I was rummaging through my old book collection and found my Artemis Fowl books! It was a pretty nostalgic moment. It turns out that the series is still going; the last book is coming out this summer!

For those who don’t know the books, it revolves around this twelve year-old criminal mastermind and his dealings with the Faerie world. In the first book, Artemis Fowl is trying to restore his family’s fortune, which involves scheming and Faerie gold. He steals the book of the Faeries, which consists of all their customs and laws, in order to learn more about them. Along the way, we are introduced to his trusty butler, bodyguard, and best friend: Butler. There are also some magical folk in the story! Captain Holly Short and Commander Julius Root (of LEPrecon, the elite branch of the Lower Elements Police of the Faerie world) try to stop Artemis’ dastardly plan (~~lookit me being all writer-y and cliche~~). Exciting things!

I was working on the endpaper illustration for the book and wanted to make it look like endpaper for the book of the Faeries. It’s a creepy elf child with a lot of vines surrounding it. The symbols (~~Total nerd alert!~~) around the child are written in Gnommish, the fairy language, which was made by Eoin Colfer. It is a warning from the book: Forever doomed shall be the one, who betrays my secrets one by one. Here is my linework of this. I also quickly added some colour just to see how it would look. Most likely I’ll be colouring it more brown/yellow. This was just a fun green thing.

Here is my series of passive-aggressive/confrontational greeting cards. It was really fun drawing the little figures! I especially enjoyed choosing the colours for their clothing. I’m uploading the one with the green background again because I made a few tweaks.

I’d imagine the text would be in the inside of the card rather than on the outside. I’ll be printing physical copies to hand in to my instructor (I’ll probably upload a photo once that’s done).

Hello!

Apologies for my infrequent updates. I’ve been busy with school work and whatnot. I’ve been struggling with this school assignment, but finally got an idea for it a few days ago. Our project is to make four greeting cards with an interesting/unique theme. I decided to draw cards with passive-aggressive/non confrontational messages.

My first card idea is “You owe me ________”. I intentionally left it blank because there are various lender/borrower awkward situations that arise which would fit this card. For example, lending money to a friend, family member, colleague, etc (especially colleagues) can become pretty awkward. Because sometimes the borrower might forget to return your money back afterwards, and you -the lender- has to figure out how to gently remind them of this. What better way to avoid face-to-face confrontation than sending a card (preferably by mail so they won’t even see you right way after receiving the card)?! Of course, this can branch out to many other lender/borrower situations: “Please return that book I lent you 6 months ago” and “Whatever happened to that sewing machine I lent you?”…the list can go on!

Basically, it’s a card with accountant-stuck-up-looking kind of guys listing all the things that the borrower owes. I imagine the inside of the card would have the words “You owe me” and space for you to write down how ever much things you want.

I’ll be posting my other three cards soon once I have finished up with the details. There’s going to be: “you’re a horrible driver”, “you’re a horrible dancer” and, “your ringtone is awful”. Fun times ahead!

Hello!

Since it’s the new year, I’d just like to post my resolution for 2012: I will update my blog more frequently – with projects I’m working on, doodles or just creative process.

Here’s the first illustration I’m posting for the new year. It was my studio project for school, which lasted the whole semester. I call it my “Running/Falling diptych project” because I intended them to be viewed together.

I also created this mini process to hand-in along with my project.
