Over the weekend I had my convocation. So it is official now: I have graduated! The grad show was great. Unfortunately, I did not stay as long as I would have liked. There just wasn’t enough time to really look at everybody’s pieces/projects (we had over 350 students graduating). But I’ll be going back to see everything again.

Here’s a photo taken by my friend’s lovely sister. There I am standing funny next to my pieces. Do you see the piece that I’ve been working on for weeks? It’s done! I will post up a singular picture of it once I get around to taking a photo.

The Calm

I think I’ll be calling it “The Calm”, like, “the calm before a storm”.
This was my first time outlining with a brush. It was terrifying.

I haven’t been able to update lately because of preparations for the grad (degree) exhibition. It’s opening May 5th, 5-10pm at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Granville Island , Vancouver!

Holly Short outline

Here’s a drawing of how I see Holly Short to look like from Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series. Her suit is based off of Bob Lea‘s rendition of Holly. I slapped on this weird brown colour in the background to make it looks less plain. It’s a work in progress anyway.

Edit: I took out that weird brown background.

Printed greeting cards

I recently went to my school’s printing facilities to get my passive-aggressive greeting cards printed. They are coincidentally the same colours as Easter’s pastel colours! I may have been too excited and went to Staples to get some chocolate-coloured envelopes to match the cards.

So Artemis Fowl is a lot harder to draw than I would have thought. I wanted to show his deviousness, his quietness, independence (seeing as both of his parents have not been a big part of his childhood) and how young he actually is in this one pose. There may be too many characteristics I want to embody into that pose.

A twelve year-old boy was a bit of a challenge for me, let alone trying to draw a fictional character from a series. Just like everyone, when I’m reading the books, I put my own image of Artemis in the story. For the longest time I always thought he was blonde…but luckily Eoin Colfer puts a few of Artemis’ physical characteristics into his writing (he actually has dark hair).

My assignment for Concept Art class is to draw our character in an array of emotions. I am hesitant and quite critical of this mostly because Artemis Fowl is not my character (if I was making up my own, I think I would have done some ridiculous emotions). For some reason it is a bit difficult to imagine this boy genuinely smiling. If you look, there’s one of him doing an awkward smile.
